Soulmate

A short story about soulmates

Imagine living in a world where everything is black and white until you meet the one person you are destined to spend your life with, forever. Imagine, that when you meet that one person, colours explode into your vision. Now imagine meeting them as a baby, not knowing who they are. Imagine only ever seeing colour. And then one day everything goes black and white.
Lilianna could see colours for as long as she could remember, while everyone in her class couldn't. She remarked once that 'those colours don't match Rebecca', and the poor four year old nearly burst out crying because 'miss why can she see colours?'
Their teacher was shocked that the solemn four year old had already found her soulmate and mentioned it briefly to her parents, who brushed the situation off. If she had met them already, they'd probably meet again.
Twenty years went by, Lilianna only ever seeing colour, however she never met her soulmate. She imagined every aspect of what they might be.
Would they be a boy or

girl? Long blonde hair or short black hair? Would they like rock and roll music or Taylor Swift? What job would they have? A doctor? Racecar driver? Teacher? How old were they? Did they have any siblings? What would their parents be like? Would they be sweet? Charitable? Maybe they'd be a comedian.
It was an average day when everything changed four Lilianna. She was going to work. It was a warm enough day, the sun was shining bright, the sky was blue..
Until it wasn't.
It happened so suddenly that she froze. The colour left slowly, first the sky was drained, as if water being poured out a glass. And then the colour drained out of everything else. Suddenly everything was in slow motion. She knew what had happened, everyone knows what happens when the colour disappears.
Her soulmate was dead.
The now colourless world seemed to spin as Lilianna tipped forward. She heard yells, but they seemed distant. Far away. All Lilianna could think of as she fell was that she would never get the chance

to meet her soulmate, never know if they rode a motorbike or if their parents would like her..
The next thing Lilianna knew she was waking up, worried, colourless faces staring at her. Tears started forming in her eyes and soon she was full on sobbing. Someone hugged her, she didn't know who, she didn't care who. All she cared was that her soulmate was dead. Dead.
