The Arsonist

A blazing fire burns down a hospital

Glass crunched under, gowns and needles were straughn throughout the room, notes were tossed around like candy rappers, and John was the only one occupying the vacant space that was once a room. John Micheal was turning 17, and as a treat to himself, he set off to explore an abandoned building in his town. John was born in Southwest Hospital, located in Galena, Illinois, the same hospital in fact, had closed down earlier that year. John was considering canceling his plans to visit the hospital, but, he wanted to see the final resting place of his mother. Carol Rodriguez, John’s mom, had passed away during childbirth, the gynecologist left air in the tube before giving the shot, she died that same day due to blood clotting, John will never forgive that doctor for the stress he caused his family.
John swept inside of the building, the blackened floor was charred and the air was damp, yet strangely familiar. The wooden floorboards creaked and snapped due to the fire. John walked up 3 sets

of stairs before finding the 4th floor, he looked around nervously at the room numbers; 400, 401, and then strangely enough, room 403, it sounds ridiculous and at the time it seemed that was too, it completely skipped the room his own mother had passed in, all that was left was a white wall with peeling paint, behind the paint John could make out the frame of a door, he tugged at the wallpaper ripped and stretched away revealing room 402 in the hallway, due to the way the building was now positioned the door swung outward on its own, creating a loud creak throughout the hallway.
John paced into the room, but to his surprise, it looked like it had never been abandoned, not saying it looked like new, but like they never left it to rot, the walls were a silk white, the bed a sky blue, the only thing out of place was the doors that connected to the other patient rooms, in their place was drywall, the door behind me closed and made a very distinct locking sound, before him the room seemed

to melt, and the paint peeled at the walls, the bed decomposed into a ash-y like substance and the door rotted off the wall. John was distraught but safely walked out of the once beautifully candle white room and shakily sprinted down the hallway, down the stairs, and into the front hallway, even though the hospital had been abandoned for over a year, the generator powered on and the lights in the hall flicked on.
John walked down a flight of stairs to floor the condemned floor, the original floor three. The door was old, like 1950s old, and when opened the door made an awful ear piercing screech before silently opening the entire door. Contained inside was the floor that had been abandoned during construction in 1934, the reason being fire hazards, but this floor was the real floor his mother had passed in, room 382 the last room in the hallway. To his surprise, the door opened smoothly, as if it’d been greased up with gasoline. “That’s odd.” he said aloud by mistake and opened the door

causing smoke to erupt from the doorway, he coughed a bit, but, being the persistent man he was he waved the smoke away and walked in.
The room held secrets that not even John had known about. Newspaper articles pinned to the wall, photos of people that had been convicted of murder, everything was about John’s family. George Micheal, his dad stuck out the most, it read, “George Micheal, convicted of fraud, murder, arson, and illegal possession of World War bombs, sadly, their family name still stands as one of the worst.” another one about Carol, “Carol Rodriguez-Micheal, married to George Micheal, she had planned a fake death to get away from her son and husband, she was unsuccessful and was actually killed during pregnancy.” and finally, one about John, “John Theodore-Micheal, a former worker at Southwest Hospital, convicted of many crimes such as arson, homicide, illegal possession of a minor, illegal possession of World War 2 bombs, rape, burglary, and animal cruelty.”
