Behind Bars

Elizabeth Frost meets Arrogance and Ignorance

Detective Elizabeth scanned over the marble white villa as she hopped out of her gold Jeep Cherokee and onto the crowd filled streets. She flashed her badge at the police officer standing just inside the tape and was led under the tape onto the crime scene. Her twin brother, Landon, strolled over as if he was walking in the park holding out a cup of coffee to Elizabeth which she gratefully accepted – with a slight smile on her lips. “Well?” Landon leant on the hood of a police car as he swept his gaze over the grounds.
“It’s safe to say that this should have been the last place a murder could’ve happened,” Elizabeth rolled her eyes at him. “Sheesh Biz, chill. The victim was Henry Campbell, a man who went from being almost homeless to affording a luxury like this,” He waved his fingers toward the house. “Within the space of a few months”
“Connections? What about his job? What did he work as?” She looked over at the forensic team outside near the spa – hunched over the now dead body of Henry

Campbell.
“He worked as an officer, but then resigned – no specific reason provided – and started work as a factory manager. Connections? I’d say he had a few friends over before he died or something because there were beer bottles smashed across the living room and the pool table had been set up. He has a wife and a son – they’re divorced – thankfully little Dean had been over with his mother over the weekend. We’ve notified the wife and she’s on her way,”
Elizabeth scoffed. “For the first time I’m not the one calling them” Landon shrugged taking a deep sip of his coffee. “He worked as an officer you said right? Where was his headquarters? Definitely not East Melbourne or I would know”
“We don’t know – his data and records were wiped – I have a feeling he didn’t resign on his own will” A different voice answered her this time – Elizabeth turned her head to see her friend, Jones Wellington, sidle up beside her.
“Oh?” She and Landon echoed at the exact same time.
“You guys creep me out,”

Jones shook his head. “Have you gone inside yet Detective Frost?” Elizabeth set her coffee cup on the hood of the car whilst Jones went in search for gloves. Together the three of them stepped inside the villa. No blood stains yet, Elizabeth noted. Jones pointed towards the master bedroom. There were rows and rows of photos and awards of Henry – working as a police officer.
“So, this is why you think he didn’t resign of his own will” Elizabeth picked up a photo, examining it. It was a tween aged Henry and another boy with dark locks and green eyes – they were both wearing a police cap each and had their arms around each other. “It seems he wanted to be an officer from a young age” Jones was back at the door.
“The lounge room has the best evidence” And without another word Elizabeth placed the photo exactly where it had been, then left the room. Jones was right – glass shards had been scattered across the luxurious red shag carpet. Elizabeth bent down to examine a shard, turning it over

in her hands. It had come from an alcohol bottle.
“Landon, these shards aren’t from the windows” Her brother took the shard from her hands and examined it.
“Do you think there was a brawl here? Perhaps it went horribly wrong and Campbell got in the middle of it,” He theorized then went over to the windows. “What smashed the window though?”
Jones walked back into the room with a particular piece of glass – there was distinct hole in the middle of it. “It’s an M24 Sniper and the bullet is .30mm”
“I guess that rules out your theory of a brawl,” Elizabeth walked over to the couch. “Let’s say that I am Henry Campbell and because of all the alcohol bottles I have a couple of my mates over. If this was an attack on just Henry Campbell the attackers would be collateral damage but there is none at this crime scene”
Landon followed her thought process, “The mates he had over were a part of it. He welcomed them into his home so he’s comfortable with them. We’ll have to look thro
